Nestled in the heart of Lancashire, the Rossendale Valley offers a wealth of lovely places to explore and enjoy with your loved ones. Whether you’re in Rawtenstall, Burnley, Haslingden, Helmshore, Waterfoot or Bacup, there’s something for everyone — from peaceful walks and quaint cafés to fascinating heritage spots and scenic drives.
Here are some of our favourite things to do locally:
1. Ride the East Lancashire Railway
Start your journey in Rawtenstall with a nostalgic trip on the East Lancashire Railway. This beautifully restored steam railway runs through some of the most picturesque countryside in the region. It’s a charming way to take in the scenery and enjoy a relaxing day out. Keep an eye out for special events like afternoon tea trains and classic car days!
2. Visit Helmshore Mills Textile Museum
For a touch of history, the Helmshore Mills Textile Museum offers a fascinating insight into Lancashire’s industrial heritage. The exhibits are engaging and there’s plenty of opportunity to sit and take it all in at your own pace. The museum’s peaceful riverside setting also makes it a lovely spot for a quiet stroll.

3. Stroll Around Whitaker Park
Located in Rawtenstall, Whitaker Park is a fantastic place for a gentle walk or a picnic on a sunny day. You can also visit The Whitaker Museum and Art Gallery while you’re there — it’s housed in a beautiful old manor and has a lovely café for a cuppa and a slice of cake afterwards.
4. Enjoy the Scenery at Clowbridge Reservoir
Just outside Burnley, Clowbridge Reservoir offers stunning views and an easy-access path around the water, perfect for a slow stroll. It’s a great place to spot local wildlife or simply sit and watch the world go by.

5. Pop into Bacup Market
For a bit of traditional charm, Bacup Market is well worth a visit. With friendly local traders and a great selection of stalls, it’s a good place to enjoy a browse and pick up something special — from homemade treats to local crafts.
6. Relax at Holden Wood Antiques & Tea Room
Set in a converted church near Haslingden, Holden Wood is a hidden gem. Browse the antiques and artwork before heading upstairs to the tearoom, where you’ll find a peaceful setting and hearty homemade food.

7. Take in the Views from The Halo in Haslingden
For those who enjoy a short walk with a reward at the top, The Halo is an iconic piece of local art set high on the hills overlooking Haslingden. The panoramic views across the valley are simply breath-taking — especially on a clear day.

8. Explore Waterfoot’s Local Shops and Eateries
Waterfoot has seen a quiet revival in recent years and now offers some lovely independent shops, cosy cafés, and artsy spots to enjoy. It’s a great place for a relaxed wander and a warm drink.
Whether it’s enjoying nature, soaking in local history, or simply sharing a slice of cake and a chat, Rossendale has so many opportunities to spend meaningful time together. At Bowtree Homecare, we believe in the value of these moments — and in helping you make the most of them.
